The Scalable Coherent Interface (SCI, IEEE standard 1596-1992) is achieving increasing use and popularity currently as a way of interconnecting multiple processing nodes. Its flexibility stems mainly from its communication protocol: in contrast to many other interconnects, SCI is not restricted to either message-based or shared-memory programming models; SCI combines both. It is up to the user and/or the system architect to choose from a broad range of execution models and paradigms. This includes efficient message passing libraries as well as shared memory models that can feature both of its NUMA or CC-NUMA variants. This guarantees a broadest possible applicability for the overall architecture and opens it to a large number of users and application domains. 
Based on SCI adapter cards and switches manufactured in Europe, the SCI community has done and is doing significant developments and state-of-the-art research on this important interconnect. This has been demonstrated during the last SCI-Europe conferences by many high quality contributions from both academia and industry.

The SCI Summer School is an intensive 1.5-day event involving 50% tutorial and 50% laboratory sessions with a strong collegiate ethos. It is targeted at both newcomers to SCI as well as those experienced in the field, with the objective to increase both the breadth and depth of their working knowledge of SCI. See also last year’s SCI Summer School 2000.

The SCI Europe Conference will occupy the remaining 1.5-day of the 3-day event. It is the objective of SCI Europe 2001 to bring together researchers actively involved in the development and the various applications of SCI technology. Through presentations and open discussions, we aim to exchange experiences, to review successes and setbacks, to identify promising research avenues and application domains, and to foster collaborations. See also last year’s SCI Europe 2000 Conference.
